Discoloration Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition that causes patches of skin to become darker than the surrounding skin. It occurs when the skin produces too much melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color.

Hyperpigmentation can affect people of any race and can appear as brown, black, gray, red, or pink spots or patches.

Expectations

What to expect with Discoloration/
Hyperpigmentation

Pigmented spots including age spots or "liver spots" may appear in sun - exposed areas. They are bigger than freckles and commonly show up on areas like the face, hands, arms, back, and feet.

The medical term for these areas is Lentigos. Hyperpigmentation can be caused by a number of factors, including:

  • Sun exposure - Sun damage is a common cause of hyperpigmentation, especially in areas of the body that are frequently exposed to the sun, like the face, neck, chest, and hands.
  • Hormonal changes - Pregnancy and birth control pills can cause hyp erpigmentation due to hormonal changes that trigger the skin to produce more melanin - Melasma .
  • Skin injuries - Hyperpigmentation can occur after a pimple, insect bite, cut, burn, or other injury heals.
  • Medications and skin care products - Some medications and skin or hair care products can irritate the skin and lead to hyperpigmentation.

For Your Information

Hyperpigmentation is usually harmless and not contagious, but it can be stressful or cause people to feel self - conscious.
